4:45 PM — Getting used to my new spot in the penalty box.  Feels weird, considering I’m usually shaking my head at the players who end up there while I’m covering the Trenton Devils.  But, to say I’ll be close to the action this year…big understatement.  Can’t wait to provide you guys with the perspective from this close!

3:45 PM — Last minute preparations are continuing on the field as the Steel are now just hours away from their inaugural home opener…

You will, of course, notice that the Steel’s field isn’t ready yet…but the Harrisburg Stampede were kind enough to lend Trenton their turf…and the Philadelphia Wings also came through with the corners of the end zone, which will remain in place until parts of the team’s field makes it through customs and arrives.

So Trenton will be defending their home turf tonight…but only figuratively, not literally.

In any event, as the players are in the midst of their pre-game meal, both RB Keon Lattimore and K Craig Camay spoke about their excitement for the home opener.

“Oh man, I’m so excited,” said the personable Lattimore.  “There’s been a lot of anticipation building over Facebook, Twitter and all the websites.  Everybody’s promoting it and excited about it.  I’m excited, I just want to go out there and do my thing, give the fans what they want.  Let them know that football is back here in Trenton, hopefully to stay.”

Camay, who earned CO-SIFL Special Teams Player of the Week honors with a stellar performance in Week 1, says the home opener has him more nervous than he was for his pro debut.

“It’s our first home game, the home opener.  I had a good game last week, and people are expecting a lot out of me this week,” Camay told TrentonSteel.com

“I’m not going to let that get to my head, though.  Yeah, I got player of the week, but that means nothing to me.  I should be trying to get that every week from here on out.  I just need to build on it, get more experience, get more exposure and try to get better every week.”

Big things are expected out of both Camay and Lattimore this season, but especially Lattimore.  Arguably the team’s biggest star, Lattimore was used primarily as a receiver and return man, and didn’t have so much as a rushing attempt despite being the team’s top running back.  Don’t expect that trend to continue, he says.

“That team was a very experienced team we played last week,” Lattimore said.

“One thing you don’t want to do is go in there and set the tone running when it’s a pass-first league.  We didn’t want to get anybody hurt.  I want to reiterate that team had experience, they had been together for a while.  This team, it was our first time playing together.  I think the chemistry is great, but we’ve still got a long ways to go.  I know that we will incorporate the run, and a lot of other things, as we go.”

As for the Erie Explosion, who currently are the only team in the division with a win, Lattimore knows that they’re a team with bigger linebackers, which present challenges to him in both running and pass blocking.

“They’re way bigger than the linebackers we faced in our first game,” he said.  “We’re going to do some things differently.  We’re going to put a bigger back in there and move me around a little bit and try to create mismatches.”

How can the Steel’s field not have arrived in time? They knew they were going to begin play around this time for over a year now.
